Financial Inclusion in PNG On 3 February 2026
Financial Inclusion in PNG On 3 February 2026, Papua New Guinea witnessed its first-ever parametric insurance payout, bringing fast, reliable protection to people at the grassroots- especially those in the informal sector. Following a 6.6 magnitude earthquake in northern PNG, the parametric policy triggered automatically, resulting in: • 3,200 beneficiaries across Goroka, Madang, and Lae • PGK 18,400 paid out • Digital transfers completed within 14 days This milestone proves that innovative insurance solutions can deliver speed, certainty, and dignity when communities need support the most. Mama Bank is proud to be part of this collaboration with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), Pacific MMI Insurance Limited, Pacific Reinsurance Ltd, and WRMS Global, working together to make financial protection accessible to all, regardless of location or background. This is more than a payout. It’s a step forward for financial inclusion and resilience in PNG.
